MESSAGE TO THE EARTH
Featured Image: Robert Powell, Deluge or The Left Behind (detail)
JOHN MUIR OPEN EXHIBITION was established to offer opportunity to environmental artists to submit works for selection to exhibit. We were extremely pleased by the quality of works submitted, which answered the themes we suggested through the titles of the exhibitions. It is an open submission with a small panel to select the artists who will take part.
2021 Message to the Earth
Each artist was chosen for their contribution to the theme, the creative ways in which they tackled the thorny subject of Global Warming and how to look after our earth. Robert Powell was the invited who wowed visitors with his intricate prints. Other artists came from across the country: Frazer Morton – photography, Susie Lieper – typography, Leoni Mhari – glass, Emily Joy – panting and sculpture, Sara Bold – oil painting, Judy Parrot – film.
In Message to the Earth we engaged the public who, inspired by the exhibition, were asked to articulate how they felt with words or images on our wall of postcards. We were overwhelmed by the response to this opportunity to contribute to the exhibition: Their thoughts will be shared at evening talks in the future.
The launch of the Pilgrimage to Cop26 was held as part of the exhibition with a celebration in Lauderdale Park and the Battery on Victoria Harbour. We were supported by East Lothian Council and we collaborated with the NLA Fellow Natalie Taylor; the Churches together especially St Ann’s; Sustaining Dunbar and Friends of John Muir’s Birthplace.
